A stainless steel cup is durable, simple, and practical for both home use and life on the go. It will not shatter like glass or porcelain, making it a good choice for children, camping, picnics, holiday homes, and other places where a cup needs to withstand a little more wear and tear.
However, stainless steel cups are not all the same. The size, construction, and type of drink you intend to use the cup for all influence which model is best suited to your needs.
Why choose a stainless steel cup?
Stainless steel is widely used for kitchen equipment and products designed for contact with food and drinks. The material is strong, retains its shape, and has a smooth surface that is easy to clean.
A stainless steel cup may develop scratches or small dents if it is used frequently or dropped. These are normal signs of wear and do not, in themselves, mean that the cup has lost its functionality.
Stainless steel cups for children
For children, a smaller stainless steel cup is often easier to handle than a large mug. SteelMate's children's cups have a capacity of 250 ml and are shaped to suit smaller hands.
They are also stackable, which is practical for families who keep several cups in the kitchen cupboard.
The biggest practical advantage in everyday family life is simple: if a child drops the cup on the floor, it will not shatter like glass or porcelain.
Stainless steel mugs for adults and older children
A larger stainless steel mug provides more room for water, squash, and other drinks. SteelMate's larger model has a capacity of 350 ml, making it suitable as an everyday drinking cup at home, on the patio, or when out and about.
Stainless steel mugs are also practical for camping, picnics, and holiday homes, where tableware is often packed, stacked, and moved around.
Can you drink hot beverages from a stainless steel cup?
That depends on the cup's construction.
An ordinary single-wall stainless steel cup does not provide insulation. Stainless steel conducts heat, so the outside of the cup can become hot when it is filled with a very hot drink.
SteelMate's standard stainless steel cups and mugs have a single-wall construction and are therefore best suited to cold and moderately warm drinks. If you need a container that can insulate a hot drink, you should choose a product with an insulated construction instead.
A stainless steel cup and an insulated mug are not the same
A stainless steel cup does not automatically become an insulated mug simply because it is made from stainless steel.
Thermal insulation comes from the construction, typically two walls with an insulating gap or a vacuum between them. A single-wall stainless steel cup does not have this insulation.
The same applies to drinking bottles: the material and the insulation are two different things.
What size cup should you choose?
For children, a smaller cup often makes the most sense because it weighs less when filled and is easier for small hands to control.
For adults or older children, a larger mug may be more practical when there is a need for more water or other drinks.
At SteelMate, you can find:
- 250 ml stainless steel cups designed with children in mind
- 350 ml stainless steel mugs for larger portions and everyday use
The best size is the one that suits the person using the cup and the way it will actually be used.
Can a stainless steel cup go in the microwave?
No. Stainless steel cups and other stainless steel containers must not be used in a conventional microwave oven. Metal reflects microwaves and can cause uneven heating or damage the oven.
If a drink needs to be heated in a microwave, it should first be warmed in a container designed for that purpose and then poured into the cup.
How to clean a stainless steel cup
Stainless steel is easy to keep clean using ordinary warm water and dishwashing liquid. However, always follow the cleaning instructions for the specific cup.
If the cup has a coloured finish or coating, handwashing may be recommended to preserve the surface for as long as possible. This applies to SteelMate's coloured stainless steel cups and mugs.
Stainless steel cups for picnics and camping
Stainless steel cups are particularly suitable for places where glass and porcelain are impractical. They can be stacked in a picnic basket, camping box, or backpack and withstand normal transport without the risk of shattering.
This makes the same cup useful at the dining table at home, on the patio, and when out on a trip.
Stainless steel cups from SteelMate
SteelMate's stainless steel cups are made from 304 (18/8) stainless steel and designed with a focus on simple functionality and durable everyday use.
You can choose between smaller cups for children and larger stainless steel mugs, allowing you to select the size according to the person and situation the cup is intended for.
