Stainless steel for children – plates, cups, and cutlery

Stainless steel plates, cups, and cutlery are well suited to everyday life with children. The material is durable, easy to clean, and can withstand being used, moved around, and occasionally dropped on the floor. However, when choosing kitchenware for children, the decision is not just about the material. Size, weight, shape, and temperature are just as important. Here are the most important things to consider.

Why choose stainless steel for children?

Stainless steel is a strong material that retains its shape. A stainless steel plate or cup will not shatter like glass or porcelain when dropped, although it can naturally develop dents, scratches, and other signs of wear.

The smooth stainless steel surface is also easy to clean and generally does not absorb colours, odours, or flavours from food and drinks during normal use.

This makes stainless steel practical for products that are used repeatedly throughout the day at mealtimes.

Stainless steel plates for children

A stainless steel plate can be used for everything from breakfast and lunch to dinner. For children, its durable construction is particularly practical because it can withstand a less careful everyday routine than porcelain or glass.

A regular flat or deep plate offers plenty of flexibility and can continue to be used as the child grows. For younger children, a divided plate can be useful when different parts of the meal need to be kept separate.

Therefore, choose a plate based not only on age, but also on your child's portion size and the types of food the plate will normally be used for.

Stainless steel cups for children

A stainless steel cup for children should be a size that the child can hold and control independently.

A smaller cup is lighter when filled and may be easier for small hands to handle than a large mug.

You should also consider the construction. An ordinary single-wall stainless steel cup is not insulated. Stainless steel conducts heat, so the outside can become hot if the cup is filled with a very hot drink.

For younger children, single-wall stainless steel cups are therefore best suited to cold or moderately warm drinks.

Stainless steel cutlery for children

Stainless steel is also an excellent material for cutlery, but size is particularly important for children.

A smaller spoon or fork can be easier to control than adult cutlery, especially when a child is just learning to eat independently. The handle should be easy to grip, and the cutlery should be suitable for the child's hands and mouth.

As the child grows, regular stainless steel cutlery can often be used without the need for specialised children's versions.

Does stainless steel get hot?

Yes. Stainless steel conducts heat, so single-wall plates, bowls, and cups can become hot when they come into contact with very hot food or drinks.

This does not mean that hot food cannot be served on a stainless steel plate. However, you should always check the temperature of both the food and the product before giving it to a child.

Can stainless steel products be used in the microwave?

No. Stainless steel plates, cups, bowls, and other products must not be used in a conventional microwave oven.

If your child's food needs to be heated in the microwave, it should first be heated in a container designed for that purpose and then served on the stainless steel plate.

Scratches and signs of wear on stainless steel

Stainless steel products will develop signs of wear over time. Cutlery may leave fine scratches on a stainless steel plate, for example, and a cup may develop marks or small dents if it is dropped.

This is normal for products that are used frequently, and visible scratches do not, in themselves, mean that the product can no longer be used.

We believe it makes sense for an everyday product to gradually develop the appearance of something that is genuinely part of everyday life.

How to choose stainless steel products for children

Start with what your child actually needs. For many families, a suitable plate, a smaller cup, and cutlery that the child can handle independently are enough for most meals.

Pay particular attention to size, weight, and shape. A product that is technically suitable for children is not necessarily practical if it is too large or heavy for the individual child.

For very young children, features such as divided sections or other child-friendly details may also be relevant. Simpler kitchenware, on the other hand, can often remain useful for longer.

Stainless steel at home and on the go

Stainless steel plates, cups, and cutlery are useful for more than just meals at home. Their durable construction makes them practical for holiday homes, picnics, camping, and trips where kitchenware needs to be packed and transported.

The same product can therefore accompany a child through many different situations rather than being used only at home.
